To use or not to use - Lens Hood

Can anyone give me details on why to use a lens hood? What are the advantages and should I have it attached to my lens at all times to help protect my lens ?
The paperwork that came with my 18 200mm has no instructions on the use of it. All replies are appreciated.Thank you!

Using a lens hood

It's good practice to always shoot with your lens hood attached since it serves two useful purposes:

1) The hood reduces flare and ghosting that can occur if the sun or a bright light source glances across the lens surface. Here's a good tutorial: Lens Flare

2) A lens hood offers some additional protection for the front element. If you accidentally swing the camera into an object, it's better that the hood absorb the impact rather than the lens!

Most modern SLR lenses include custom-sized hoods (often having a "petal" design for better performance), and you can usually reverse the hood for storage on the lens when not in use (see below).

I personally always use the lens hood under all circumstances. It avoids lens flare from sunshine and unwanted light from a flash aswell.

Thanks for your reply Anouschka. I'm using the hood all the time now also.I have the petal shaped hood like Mark has pictured here.I still get some flare on outdoor pictures which I am looking into getting a circular Polarizer lens filter.I have an inexpensive polarizer not a circular filter now I use which I'm not happy with. Is there a brand you could recommend for me to look into buying?
