Fill-flash!?

Fill flash is the use of flash to "fill in" shadow areas where the lighting is either too contrasty or weak.

When shooting outdoors, you'll often get deep shadows on your subject if in direct sunlight. By manually setting your flash to ON (depending on the camera*), you can use fill flash to add light into those shadows, balancing the exposure.

* Most but not all cameras support the use of fill flash. Check your manual.
